Cathedral of Christ the King

The parish of Christ the King began with a small congregation celebrating its first Mass at what was then St. Catherine’s Academy on North Limestone Street in 1945. A year later, the congregation relocated to a prefabricated wood structure on the parish’s current grounds in the Chevy Chase neighborhood. In 1951, Christ the King School opened its doors to students, and by 1967, the new church building was dedicated. In 1988, Christ the King became the Cathedral parish for a newly-formed, 50-county Roman Catholic Diocese of Lexington.

Following years of campus expansions and with continuing improvements to its facilities, the Cathedral parish now serves nearly 1,800 registered households and over 500 students; engages over a hundred staff and a multitude of ministry volunteers; and hosts a wide range of events in its halls and on its grounds annually.

What has not changed is the heart of its mission and commitment to caring for the community and diocese: Loving God, Serving Others, and Forming Disciples of Jesus Christ in His Holy Church.
