Green Check businesses demonstrate a commitment to improving the environment through sustainable choices and education. Participants have initiated dozens of projects over the years, including installing bike racks, planting rain gardens, upgrading to energy-efficient lighting and increasing recycling and reuse.
“Sustainability has been an important part of our business model since we opened,” says Alison Rickert with Leestown Coffee House. “The Green Check program has allowed us to dig deeper into our sustainability goals by helping us to evaluate the good things we were already doing, and finding changes we could make that we had never even thought about. The education that this program has provided to us is invaluable, and we are excited to continue to learn and grow.”
The Green Check program begins with a personal consultation and completion of the Green Check Sustainability Scorecard, which is tailored to a wide range of sectors including restaurants, nonprofits, retail and manufacturing. Certification is valid for three years, and businesses are encouraged to pursue higher levels through continued participation and achievement. Participation in the program is free. Since its launch in 2016, more than 80 businesses have participated in the Green Check program.
The interest form for the next round of Green Check certification is open now through Jan. 31, 2026.
