Welcome to the 2025 Green Check Class

The tenth class of Green Check businesses is well on their way to being certified! Green Check is a free program for businesses, non-profit organizations and places of worship in Lexington to earn recognition for their environmental efforts. With guidance from Lexington’s Division of Environmental Services, the groups learn about ways to become greener and reduce their environmental impact. The Green Check certification program was established in 2016. To date, more than 70 businesses have achieved Green Check certification; levels include member, bronze, silver and gold.

In 2025, eight businesses are working towards achieving certification. They include:

Cathedral of Christ the King, which has a pollinator garden on site, offers a yearly used uniform sale to cut down on textile waste and donates leftover food from events to the Catholic Action Center and the Hope Center.

Facility Commissioning Group is an engineering consultant that has been involved with several LEED certified projects. They reduce waste by going paperless for meetings and encourage employees to carpool when possible.

The Holy Spirit Parish & Newman Center spearheaded the collection of plastic bags and material from their congregants to support Lexington’s Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge. They regularly participate in community litter pick-ups and offer a free bike check-out program.

Lakeside Golf Course is designated as a Certified Audobon Cooperative Sanctuary. They have worked closely with the Friends of Jacobson Park on installing a riparian buffer to increase water quality and improve wildlife habitat.

Leestown Coffee House sources all their food and tea locally. They give away coffee grounds for use in composting and gardening.

The Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center was an early adopter of LED lighting in both their gallery and theater. They reduced the number of print materials that they order to minimize waste and reuse the materials whenever possible.

Tetra Tech tracks their annual waste and issues a sustainability report card each year. They use geothermal heat, as well as focusing on reusing whenever possible.

Triton offered a group bicycle education opportunity for employees and has issued a “no Styrofoam” memo.
